Amazon Q Developer
the six Ws · specification
Developed by Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Amazon Q Developer is an AI coding assistant, rebranded from CodeWhisperer, offering inline completions and autonomous agents for feature implementation, refactoring, and dependency upgrades, with deep AWS API knowledge.
Available as plugins for VS Code, JetBrains, Visual Studio, Eclipse, the AWS Console, and a command-line interface.
Rebranded from CodeWhisperer in April 2024; its open-source CLI was superseded by the closed-source Kiro CLI in 2026.
It exists to give AWS-centric developers accurate suggestions for AWS SDKs, CloudFormation, and infrastructure-as-code alongside general coding help.
Requires an AWS account (free or Pro tier) and IDE plugin installation.
The command-line interface was briefly open-sourced under Apache 2.0 but is now a maintenance-only archive, superseded by the closed-source Kiro CLI; code context is sent to AWS-hosted models.
